A Korean table set with many small shared dishes

Did you know — Korean culture

A traditional Korean table is counted, not just laid. The bansang system names a meal by how many banchan accompany the rice and soup — 3-cheop, 5-cheop, 7-cheop, 9-cheop — with rice, soup, kimchi and jang not counted at all, because they were considered a given rather than a dish. The 12-cheop table was reserved for the king. Everything on this page is, in that sense, one very large 12-cheop problem.
